Sense – Understanding Choice and Consent – Safeguarding Adults Week

Following our 2024 AGM, Steve Kiekopf and Tracy Girling from Sense led a seminar on Understanding Consent and Choice.

Individuals with complex needs often do not have the opportunity to learn about how they can keep themselves safe. This year Sense ran a pilot project with individuals attending their college and day service to better understand the concepts of consent and choice.

Consent and choice are crucial to someone understanding their rights relating to safeguarding and keeping safe.

Sense worked with Vamos Theatre Company to explore these issues. They ran theatre and role play workshops using gesture, masks, and non-formal communication. In this way they explored these key themes, helping participants recognise that their ‘No’ is as valuable as their ‘Yes’. They also explored various different ways of making choices, and how they might communicate these choices to others.
