Prevention Conference 2025: Preventing Modern Slavery: Learnings from exploitation of vulnerable workers in the UK by the GLAA and Laura Thorpe

GLAA

Andy Hine, Senior Enforcement Officer at Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA), ran a workshop at the 2025 Ann Craft Trust Safeguarding Adults Conference.

Ann Craft Trust Safeguarding Adults Manager Laura Thorpe supported the workshop.

The GLAA is part of the Home Office. Their role is to protect vulnerable and exploited workers by investigating labour abuse and exploitation across all aspects of the UK labour market. They perform partnership work to target, dismantle and disrupt serious and organised crime across the country.

Andy highlighted certain statistics about the current state of modern slavery. Across the world, approximately 50 million people are living in modern slavery. In 2024, the UK Home Office received over 19,000 potential modern slavery victim referrals.
