Mental Health and Safeguarding – It’s Important to Check In

Men's Mental Health Week

Victoria Birkett is a University of Nottingham Student who’s currently working a placement at The Ann Craft Trust. As part of her placement, we asked her to share her thoughts on Men’s Mental Health Week (9 – 15 June).

Men’s Mental Health Week is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about the unique mental health challenges men face. Through promoting supportive conversations, the week encourages men to prioritise their emotional wellbeing and seek help without stigma.

During Men’s Mental Health Week, it’s vital to shine a light on the emotional wellbeing of the men in our lives. Far too often, men feel the pressure to stay silent about their struggles, bottling up stress, trauma, or pain. This silence can lead to emotional strain, and in some cases could mean that certain signs of abuse or mental health crises will go unnoticed.

How can we help?

👉 Start the conversation. A simple check-in with a friend can go a long way. Let the men around you know you’re there to listen without judgement.

👉 Raise awareness. Share resources, stories, and support tools on social media to help break the stigma.

👉 Check in with yourself. It’s equally important for men to recognise when they need support and to feel safe in reaching out.
