Hello, and welcome to the summer edition of the Ann Craft Trust Safeguarding Adults Bulletin.
You can download a printable PDF version of this bulletin here.
First, I’d like to welcome three new trustees to the Ann Craft Trust: Sarah Mander, Deborah Peat, and Dr Mark Brookes. We are also looking for a new chair of trustees. You’ll find more information about this role, and how to apply, below.
In the last Bulletin we revealed that the theme of this year’s Safeguarding Adults Week will be prevention. As part of this, we’re encouraging people to change the conversation. Rather than reacting to instances of abuse, or waiting for concerns to arise, we want to focus on preventing abuse from occurring in the first place, rather than only waiting for concerns to arise. You can read my thoughts on this below.
Part of changing the conversation also includes thinking about language we use. I was both saddened and heartened by an article read this week about how language, including that used in legislation, has shifted over time. I was saddened that, as a society, we ever felt and spoke in such a way about people with learning or physical disabilities, for example. But it was heartening to consider that, for the most part, we’ve left some language behind, and that we’re all starting to recognise and call out poor language choice.
By taking an inclusive approach, we can stop implicitly “blaming” individuals with labels like “vulnerable”, “challenging”, and “complex”.
Finally from me, a quick update on this November’s Safeguarding Adults Conference in Nottingham. Tickets are selling fast!! More than half of them have gone already! Details of our conference can be found below and I’d urge you to BOOK NOW to avoid disappointment.
Happy reading,

Change the Conversation!
What do we talk about when we talk about safeguarding?
Broadly speaking, we talk about what we can do to keep people safe. But all too often, the discussions we have are reactive.
A focus on “lessons we can learn” implies that we need to wait for something to go wrong before we can identify what needs fixing.
Here’s how we’re trying to change the conversation >>

In early June, Roisin left The Ann Craft Trust for a new role with Leicestershire County Council.
