Building confidence in safeguarding adults
Over 80 Team England staff and Designated Safeguarding Officers (DSO’s) received training to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to:
- Recognise and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns involving athletes, staff or volunteers.
- Understand who to speak to and what action to take if concerns arise.
- Appreciate the role they play in creating a positive, safe and supportive environment where everyone can perform at their best.
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and major events such as the Commonwealth Games present unique opportunities and challenges. By preparing staff and DSOs ahead of the Games, Team England is helping to create an environment where wellbeing, safety and performance can thrive together.
Looking after those who support others
Alongside exploring safeguarding responsibilities, the training also highlighted the importance of wellbeing during the intense and demanding Games period.
Staff were encouraged to think ahead about the support they may need for themselves and their colleagues, recognising that those responsible for safeguarding others also need opportunities to look after their own wellbeing. Planning, sharing responsibilities and maintaining supportive networks can help ensure everyone is able to perform their role effectively throughout the Games.
A collaborative approach to safeguarding
Emma Speer, Team England Safeguarding Lead, reflected on the impact of the training:
“As Lead Safeguarding Officer for Team England, one of my priorities has been ensuring that everyone travelling to the Games feels confident in their role in creating a safe and supportive environment. The training delivered by Ann Craft Trust and the NSPCC Sport has been a key part of that preparation.
The sessions were engaging, practical and tailored to the realities of a Games environment, giving our Designated Safeguarding Officers the knowledge and confidence to recognise concerns, respond appropriately and understand the part they play in safeguarding our team. It has also helped strengthen the relationships across our DSO network, creating a collaborative approach that will be invaluable during the Games.
Ultimately, effective safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and this training has helped us build a workforce that is better equipped to support our athletes, staff and volunteers so everyone can enjoy a safe, positive and successful Games experience.”
