Spotlight on Psychological Safety at Board Level

Psychological safety is a key ingredient of effective governance.

Psychological safety means creating a culture in which speaking up is welcomed and valued.

A culture of psychological safety can empower board members to openly share their thoughts, to raise concerns, and to offer constructive feedback. This means that safeguarding discussions can become clearer, more honest, and more assured. It also means that the board may spot potential risks much earlier.

Key aspects of psychological safety at board level include:

  • Respectful challenge – Members openly encourage others to question their assumptions.
  • Openness to learning – The board discusses mistakes constructively, with a focus on improvement, not blame.
  • Inclusive discussion – Every voice gets heard.
  • Clarity of expectations – The board treats safeguarding as a shared responsibility. They regularly reflect on what is working and what needs attention.
  • Supportive leadership – Where the board’s chairs and champions model curiosity and calm reflection.

What Board Champions can do:

Board champions can play a key role in creating a culture of psychological safety.

They can:

  • Encourage safeguarding to be discussed early in meetings, rather than squeezing discussions into the last few minutes.
  • Ask reflective, non‑defensive questions.
  • Support lead safeguarding officers to share risks honestly, without fear of judgement.
  • Model calm, constructive challenge.
  • Reinforce that learning, not perfection, is the goal.

At board level, a culture of psychological safety creates space for more open and respectful safeguarding conversations. This can strengthen assurance and help build safer cultures across the organisation.
