This course explores listening to and communicating with children and young people about their everyday experiences focusing on times when they feel unsafe or when plans for their care are being made.
We will look at the process of communication, relationships and challenges faced by workers as well as the roles and responsibilities of professionals, the dynamics and power inherent in communication with children and the methods and approaches to direct work.
Developing an understanding of the child’s needs and impairments (from children’s rights’ standpoint) you will look at how participation can be promoted at all stages of work with children and families.
Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone who works with children and young people with a disability in any organisation, business or charity and wants to improve their ability to communicate and capture the voice of the children and young people they’re working with.
This could include:
- Those working with younger children as well as teens and young people up to 25
- Police and criminal justice sectors
- Education (both mainstream and special education)
- Safeguarding leads
- Health and social care
- Mental health
- Adults workers who need to understand child protection
- Those working in advocacy organisations
Aims of the Communication with Disabled Children course
- Raise awareness of communication and successful approaches to supporting children and young people with communication difficulties.
- Reflect on your own role in encouraging successful communication.
- Cover all aspects of communication including verbal and non-verbal, listening and understanding, and social use of communication.
- Provide guidance on assessing communication needs and accessing appropriate additional support and advice.
- Introduce a range of useful communication strategies, tailored to the needs of participants relevant to their daily working practice.
The Communication with Disabled Children course will explore the following areas:
- Models of communication
Developing models of communication relevant to the children and young people they support.
- Communication needs
Understanding the communication needs of the children and young people they support in terms of both understanding and communicating with others.
- Promoting positive communication
Understand the importance of their role in promoting positive communication.
- Communication tools and strategies
Recognise a range of communication tools and strategies used with children and young people with communication difficulties which are relevant to those they support.
- Support and help
Know when they need further help with communication, and where and how to get that support
- Practical communication ideas
Gain practical ideas for positive communication, which can be integrated into their daily home and work environments.
