Duncan Craig OBE, CEO of We Are Survivors, ran a workshop during the Ann Craft Trust’s 2025 Safeguarding Adults Conference.
We Are Survivors is the largest voluntary sector organisation in the UK providing therapeutic and advocacy support to male victims and survivors of sexual harms.
They define their mission as follows:
To break the silence of the sexual harm on boys and men, providing support and advocacy to them and their loved ones to engage in positive healing free from the impact of abuse; and educating society on the prevention and impact of sexual harms against boys and men.
Duncan began by providing clear definitions of various forms of sexual harm. He also shared various statistics: Research suggests that 1 in 6 males will experience sexual abuse, rape or sexual exploitation. 20% of males sampled in a data dive took over 31 years to disclose childhood sexual abuse.
Duncan went on to explore what motivates perpetrators to offend, along with various methods for ensuring victim compliance. He also discussed the various barriers that might prevent victims from disclosing, along with the factors that might eventually trigger disclosure. Duncan also spoke frankly about his own experiences of sexual abuse.
