Prevention Conference 2025: Poor Choice or No Choice? Improving safeguarding for adults at risk of exploitation by Dr Alison Gardner

Dr Alison Gardner, a researcher at the University of Nottingham’s Rights Lab, in partnership with Rachel Clawson, discussed the exploitation of adults with cognitive impairments at the 2025 Safeguarding Adults Conference.

The workshop discussed a three year study funded by the Nuffield Foundation. It opened with a recap on the research findings about links between cognitive impairment and exploitation in England. The session then explored safeguarding in contexts where there are concerns about mental capacity, exploitation and potential coercion. There was also some group discussions around certain case studies.
