
DBS is putting on a calendar of workshops specifically for the Sports Sector in Wales.
These workshops will help sport and activity organisations in Wales understand the different elements of DBS, and how they relate to their organisations.
Each workshop will take place on Microsoft Teams.
DBS Overview Workshop
This 60 minute workshop, focusing on the Sports Sector, will cover:
- The role of the Disclosure and Barring service
- Understanding DBS Checks and role eligibility, including levels of check and workforce
- What ‘regulated activity’ is
- An Organisation’s duties and responsibilities in regard to referring to DBS
- Understand the DBS barring process and the consequences of being placed on one or both Barred Lists
Wednesday 18 June (1:00 pm – 2:00 pm) & Friday 19 September (10:00 am – 11:00 am)
DBS Disclosure Workshop
The 90 minute workshop, focusing on the Sports Sector, will cover:
- The benefits of DBS and your organisation working together
- The different levels of DBS check
- Eligibility, and when an employee is eligible for a check
- What ‘regulated activity’ is
- What the DBS Update Service is, and its benefits
- The safe recruitment practices that can be in place, with DBS checks forming a part of these

DBS Barring Workshop
The 90 minute workshop, focusing on the Sports Sector, will cover:
- The benefits of DBS and your organisation working together
- What ‘regulated activity’ is
- When a DBS barring referral should be made, including when the legal duty is met
- The three different referral routes
- How to make a good quality referral
- The consequences of not making appropriate barring referrals
- The consequences of being included on one or both Barred Lists
Tuesday 2 September (12:00 pm – 1:30 pm) & Friday 30 January (10:00 am – 11:30 am)
DBS Information Gathering Workshop
The 90 minute workshop will cover:
- Why requests are made by DBS and what we do with that information
- The legal duty placed on organisations to provide this information
- The legislation that underpins these requests and allows for sharing with confidence
- The importance of responding to requests to safeguard vulnerable groups
Tuesday 25 November (1:00 pm – 2:30 pm) & Tuesday 10 February (11:00 am – 12:30 pm)
DBS Update Service Workshop
The 90 minute workshop will cover:
- What the Update Service is (and is not)
- Which DBS certificates can be registered with the service
- Benefits of the service to applicants and recruiters
- Status checking & interpreting the results
- Update Service and Home-Based positions
- Using the Update Service when recruitment decisions are made off site

DBS Barring Referral Service Workshop
The 60 minute workshop will cover:
- Who has a legal duty to refer
- When you should make a referral
- How to make a Barring Referral
Friday 12 December (10:00 am – 11:00 am) & Tuesday 17 February (1:00 pm – 2:00 pm)
DBS Harmful Behaviour Workshop
The 90 minute workshop will cover:
- What we mean by harmful behaviour
- Safeguarding, Abuse and Neglect
- Relevant Conduct and Risk of Harm
- Harmful behaviour and the transferability of risk
- How to make a Barring referral to DBS
