Child Sexual Exploitation of Children with Learning Disabilities

The NWG Network and the Ann Craft Trust have worked in partnership to develop two new training courses to meet the levels of expertise of practitioners who work within the field of CSE and learning disabilities.

Both courses aim to enhance the knowledge and awareness of delegates, helping them to understand how the young person’s perception and understanding of the world around them is affected. Many young people do not have a specific diagnosis but have a variety of complex emotional and health needs. Delegates will develop their practical skills to be able to help them prepare and support young people whether they have a diagnosis or not.

CSE & Learning Disabilities: For Practitioners Specialising in CSE

This course is aimed at practitioners whose main role is within safeguarding children in the field of CSE. This training will concentrate on developing your knowledge of young people with learning disabilities and difficulties and how this can impact on the work you do in safeguarding them from abuse and exploitation.

You may work within the following fields:

  • Police
  • Education
  • Health services, as a specialist CSE worker
  • Domestic abuse services
  • Social Worker who meets with young people at risk of CSE on a daily basis

A young person’s ability to understand risks, respond to social cues, make sense of consent and relationships can be challenging for them. This can lead to them being labelled as challenging and this judgement prevent behaviours being seen as a form of communication. This course seeks to develop our knowledge and awareness of how difficulties and challenges in learning affect how young people make sense of and respond to risk. Many young people do not have a specific diagnosis and whilst attending mainstream schools are also having to cope with a variety of complex emotional and health needs.

Delegates will develop their practical and communication skills in order for interventions to be more effective when supporting young people whether they have a diagnosis or not.
