  • Do the staff have knowledge of their role and responsibility with regard to safeguarding in the organisation?

  • Do you have a Safeguarding Lead in the organisation?
  • Do you have a Safeguarding Group that meets regularly to look at safeguarding across the organisation and reports to the Board of Trustees/Directors?
  • Are your Board of Trustees/Directors aware of their responsibility with regard to safeguarding in the organisation?
  • Does your organisation equip its managers to gain relevant skills and knowledge that will contribute to overall safeguarding?
  • Does your organisation apply safeguarding principles to the process of finding and employing the best staff including regular DBS checks?
  • Does your organisation equip new staff to understand issues in relation to safeguarding?
  • Do all staff, managers and Trustees have induction and safeguarding training including refresher training which is monitored and evaluated?
  • Does your organisation have a rigorous approach to the staff probationary period monitoring the competence and capability of new staff?

  • Do you have a Whistleblowing/Raising Concerns policy?
  • Does the policy include internal and external support for staff if they raised a concern/whistle blew?
  • Where concerns have been reported or recognised, can you show that your organisation has reacted promptly and appropriately in each case?
  • Are you confident that the finances of the people you support are scrutinised properly and the accounting system would identify any financial abuse?

  • Does your organisation hold information about how many concerns have been raised in the previous quarter/year and have the opportunity to examine and discuss this safeguarding data regularly?

  • Are the relevant staff aware of their roles and responsibilities with regard to the Local Authority, Charities Commission and Care Quality Commission?
  • Do your staff understand the Local Authority thresholds for reporting?
